From April 2014 all new and refurbished residential care homes, homes in multiple occupation and hostels (as well as certain other types of premises) will have to be fitted with an approved fire suppression system.
From 1 January 2016 all new and converted single family dwellings including houses and flats will also have to be protected with approved automatic fire suppression systems. This new law applies to all newly built houses, care homes and halls of residence at universities. The proposal was passed unanimously by Welsh assembly members after Ann Jones propositioned the idea back in 2011. Ann Jones stated that the safety sprinkler systems would effectively save lives and reinforced her reputation as someone trying to make a difference.
“It won’t go off if you burn your toast. It won’t go off if the pizza’s burning. It will only go off when there is a fire and when it goes off that saves those lives…. Not many of the votes we pass here save lives – that one did”
“It saves the lives of the people, it saves the lives of firefighters having to go into burning buildings and it just makes sense to get on and do it now.”
The regulation to include sprinkler systems in all newly built homes in Swansea, Bridgend, Port Talbot, Neath, Cardiff & Wales was backed by all three fire and rescue services in Wales. The National Fire Sprinkler Network, Chief Fire Officers Association (UK) & the Fire Brigades Union all backed the campaign to include fire safety sprinkler systems in new builds from September 2013.
